DENTAL SEALANTS

Dental sealants are plastic coatings that are placed on the chewing surfaces of the permanent back teeth (molars or premolars) to help protect them from the cavities (bacteria). The first sealants are placed around 6 years of age.

It’s in the scope of practice of dental hygienist to place sealants when
indicated. It doesn’t hurt at all because it’s like a nail polish material that is painted on top of the chewing surface of a tooth. Once the filling material is placed in it gets hardened by using a special light. It does not require drilling or a needle. It takes 2-5 minutes per tooth. Not everyone needs sealants but in most cases it is indicated due to deep grooves on the chewing surfaces. It is the normal anatomy of back teeth. Ask if your child is a good candidate for sealants.
